Bringing your puppy home and next steps
Complete your puppy’s AKC registration Paperwork
You will receive an AKC Dog Registration Application with your take home kit. When you complete your portion and submit it with the proper fee, the AKC will process the application and you will receive an AKC Registration Certificate.
Please keep in mind that all puppies from Westpaw Ranch have a AKC limited registration. Limited Registration means that the dog is registered but no litters produced by that dog are eligible for registration. A dog registered with an AKC Limited Registration shall be ineligible to be entered in a breed competition in a licensed or member dog show. It is eligible, however, to be entered in any other licensed or member event. These events include: Obedience, Rally, Agility, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Earthdog, Fast Cat, CAT, Scentwork, Junior Showmanship, Trick Dog and CGC. Limited Registration certificates are white with an orange border; the Full Registration certificate is white with a purple border.
For more information, please visit the official AKC website here, or feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Make a veterinary appointment
A certificate for a complimentary first veterinary office visit is provided by AKC upon registration. Submit your e-mail address when registering your new puppy and the AKC will e-mail you a certificate for a complimentary first veterinary office visit along with a list of participating veterinarians.
A licensed Veterinarian must check the puppy within 2 working days the you have possession of the puppy. A copy of the veterinarian exam must be sent to Westpaw Ranch within 2 weeks of receiving the puppy or the contract will be Null and Void. NO EXCEPTIONS. If upon examination by a licensed veterinarian the puppy is found to have any health or hereditary problems, Westpaw Ranch agrees to replace the puppy as soon as possible from the next available liter. If a puppy will not be available in a reasonable time, Westpaw Ranch has the option to refund the purchase price on the return puppy in the same condition the puppy was upon pickup. Complete details are outlined in our contract, and we’re happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Complete the Microchip Registration
Our puppies are microchipped and enrolled with AKCReUnite.org at no cost to the new family. When I send the puppy to their new home, I enroll the puppy in AKCReunite.org pet recovery, so all the new family has to do is go to the AKCReunite.org website and change the puppy's name to the desired name. The needed paperwork will be provided with the puppy. We always list Westpaw Ranch as the alternate contact because I want to make sure that none of the puppies are ever left in an animal shelter with no one to rescue them! It is my understanding that the new family can change the 'alternate contact'. However, if neither the primary contact or the alternate contact can be reached, AKCReunite will contact the original purchaser of the microchip.
Follow a Puppy Vaccination Schedule
Every puppy is unique, and their vaccination needs can vary based on factors like where you live and individual risk factors. That’s why it’s essential to work closely with your licensed veterinarian to create a personalized vaccination plan. As part of our contract, all puppy owners are required to keep up with their dog’s annual veterinary visits to ensure their Westie stays healthy and protected throughout their life.
